About Audition Factory

The Audition Factory is not a new idea. It's been driving us crazy for years. Actually, we were ready years ago - technology was not.

The Audition Factory is the brainchild of Geoff and Helaine Fox. Between us, there's more than 40 years of broadcasting experience, including 7 Emmys. Helaine was a promotion director. Geoff is on-the-air every day as a meteorologist.

This factory is ours! In the tight-knit broadcasting community, we need to keep you happy if we expect to stay in business. 'Nuff said.

What makes this service possible is nearly universal high-speed Internet access at TV stations and production facilities and reasonable tools for converting analog video (what's on your tape) to digital video (what you see here on line).

Could you do this yourself? Sure - why not? We did.

Seriously, unless you plan on doing a lot of these, it's a pain! There's a lot to buy and a lot to learn.

First, we built our own computers. Then we found the necessary hardware to do the analog/digital conversion. We didn't scrimp. We master the video as an AVI file with low loss compression.

Before your video is served off the web, it's transcoded to the Flash FLV format. We could have used Real, Windows Media or Quicktime, but FLV is nearly universal. In an April 2006 survey, Adobe found almost 98% of computers had Flash installed!

Nothing should stand in the way of your video being watched.

If the person watching your video has Flash installed, and there's a 98% chance of that, it will play without an external player or pop-ups. Better still, it will play almost instantly.

Each step in our process is unique and the learning curve is steep. That's why all you have to do is send us your tape (or DVD) and resume. We do everything else - and there's a lot to 'everything.'

First, we digitize your video. Because it will be served up online, there's no need to have one continuous stream. We'll break your tape down to its components. If you've got anchoring, reporting and standups, each component will be available individually on your site. For photographers and editors, we split your tape the same way. The person looking just clicks to go from cut to cut at any time.

Next, we build your site, adding your resume and other material to the video. We thought long and hard and decided your video should go on your own site - www.yourname.com. Not every domain is available, but there are lots of great names to choose from.
